First, remove the bobbin
With the thumb of the left hand, press the lower release lever to the left.

This lowers the race cover to allow you to remove hook
(also known as the shuttle).
Next, fold down the u-shaped locking strap with the black hook race cover
Take out the hook

Clean the top and botton of the hook race with a brush--a stiff brush or a toothbrush is recommended. Never use scissors or a screwdriver to remove thread or fabric remnants from hook area.
Lightly oil the hook with 2-3 drops of oil

Insert the hook back into machine.
Close the black hook race cover with equal pressure applied to both sides of cover. Make sure cover snaps closed.
Turn hand wheel to ensure correct insertion with the power off. If a bind or obstruction is felt, remove hook and reinstall, making sure hook race cover is properly closed.
(for example: Artista models 180 & 200, 640 & 730)
NOTE: Too much oiling may cause poor quality stitches with a rotary hook, but oiling is essential--in moderation. One should still oil a rotary hook after every 6-8 eight hours of sewing, just not in excess.
